After months of closure due to unforeseen repairs, Sea Point Pavilion’s iconic Olympic-sized saltwater swimming pool is set to reopen on Friday, December 13, 2024, at 7 am. The beloved facility, a popular spot for both locals and tourists, had been shut down since September following the discovery of a sinkhole caused by a collapsed water line. The closure allowed for extensive repairs to the infrastructure, including excavation work, pipeline restoration, and updates to the pool’s basin and mechanical systems, ensuring a safe and efficient reopening.
The sinkhole, discovered during a routine inspection, was a significant blow to the Pavilion, a key recreational space that serves as both a public swimming area and a training facility for triathletes and competitive swimmers. In addition to repairing the water line, the pool was drained, cleaned, and had its fibre lining repaired, which had been damaged over time. The City of Cape Town’s efforts to address these issues were thorough, with plant and mechanical works being tested to guarantee the pool’s functionality before welcoming visitors again.
Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Patricia Van der Ross, expressed the importance of the Pavilion to the community, stating, “Our swimming pool operations draw significant interest from the public each year, and for good reason—they are among our most popular recreational facilities.” The reopening of the Pavilion will undoubtedly come as a relief to many, providing a much-needed place for exercise, relaxation, and enjoyment during the summer months.
In addition to the technical repairs, the Pavilion has undergone a makeover, with vibrant, colourful walls inspired by the Pavilion’s forecourt and its nearby food kiosks. The fresh new look is set to enhance the experience for visitors, adding to the already festive and inviting atmosphere of the facility. These improvements reflect the city’s ongoing commitment to maintaining and improving its recreational spaces for the enjoyment of the public.
Visitors to the Pavilion should be aware of a few important details before their visit. The facility will be open from 7 am to 7 pm Tuesday to Sunday, including public holidays, and from 12 pm to 7 pm on Mondays. Entry fees are affordable, with adults charged R36 for a single entry, or R446 for a monthly membership. Children under 16 can access the pool for just R21, with monthly memberships available for R195. Pensioners and toddlers can enter for free. To avoid delays, it’s recommended that visitors bring cash for payment, as card machines may cause potential delays.

As the city prepares for the reopening, excitement is building for the return of one of Cape Town’s most cherished public swimming pools. Whether for fitness, leisure, or simply a day of sun and relaxation, the Sea Point Pavilion is poised to once again be a hub for both locals and tourists looking to enjoy the summer season.
