A shocking string of on-set incidents has rocked the production of two high-profile telenovelas, Empini and Queendom, sparking concerns over safety protocols and professionalism. Sources close to the productions have revealed a pattern of financial woes, cast injuries, and alleged mismanagement.
In a disturbing incident, Empini actor Mpumi Mpama was recently injured during a rehearsal fight scene. According to insiders, Mpama was struck with a gun, despite script instructions to merely push him. The severity of the injury necessitated immediate medical attention and a two-day production halt.
A scathing open letter, obtained by ZiMoja, highlights the lack of oversight and communication that led to Mpama’s injury. The letter, penned by a crew member, expresses concerns over the repeated safety breaches on set. “At least three to four other cast members have also complained of injuries,” the letter states. “It’s essential we maintain a professional environment to foster creativity and safety.”
Zibuyile Dladla, PR specialist at Showmax, confirmed Mpama’s injury, assuring that the actor has recovered and returned to work. “We take safety seriously,” Dladla emphasized. “Experienced professionals coordinate all stunt-related activities, and detailed rehearsals and risk assessments are conducted to minimize hazards.”
Empini and Queendom, produced by Clive Morris Productions, have faced financial struggles and on-set issues since their inception. The cast and crew initially went unpaid, only to receive compensation later. Empini has since been reassigned to Crystal Pics, which insiders claim is experiencing its own set of challenges.
The incidents have raised questions about the industry’s commitment to cast and crew safety. “This is a wake-up call for production companies to prioritize safety protocols,” said a veteran industry insider. “The well-being of those on set should never be compromised for the sake of drama or ratings.”
