Ngizwe Mchunu, the former UKhozi FM presenter, is slowly making his comeback after a turbulent period. Yesterday, he renewed his relationship with JAC Motors in Port Shepstone, KwaZulu-Natal, when the car dealership surprised him with a brand-new SUV. Mchunu was excited to share the news with ZiMoja, clarifying that the vehicle is not a sponsorship but a personal gift. “Last year they sponsored me with a car, but now our relationship has been taken a notch up. This time around, they gifted me this brand-new car, which comes with a petrol card for travel,” Mchunu explained.
The gesture marks a positive shift for Mchunu, who had a fallout with the dealership a year ago after making controversial remarks. His public statements, which included calling EFF leader Julius Malema unwelcome at the Moses Mabhida stadium during the party’s election manifesto in December, as well as derogatory comments about Limpopo people, led to a public outcry. In response, JAC Motors terminated their sponsorship of Mchunu and recalled the vehicle they had provided him, distancing themselves from his comments.
At the time, the dealership issued a statement condemning Mchunu’s remarks, emphasizing that every South African had the right to live and travel freely across provinces without fear of discrimination. Mchunu, in turn, apologized for his words, explaining that he was not tribalistic and respected all the country’s diverse communities.
The recent gift from JAC Motors, however, signals a change in the relationship between Mchunu and the dealership. While no official statement has been released to explain their decision to reconnect with him, the gesture suggests that the situation has been resolved, marking a fresh chapter for Mchunu as he rebuilds his public image and professional relationships.
