Despite swirling rumours on social media, controversial blogger Musa Khawula is very much alive, though he’s far from free. Khawula, known for his sensational online presence, appeared in court this week—wearing orange prison attire—contrary to the death rumours that have been circulating.
Khawula’s courtroom appearance was short-lived, as the judge postponed his case to give him time to secure legal representation. His previous lawyer had abandoned him, leaving him in a precarious legal position. Currently, Khawula is serving a 60-day sentence for contempt of court, stemming from his failure to appear in a Gauteng court earlier this year.
Khawula’s legal troubles began in earnest after he made serious allegations against Nozuko Mbalula, the wife of ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula, and her business partner, Michelle Perrow. In May, Khawula accused Mbalula and Perrow of bribery, claiming they secured government tenders worth R150 million between 2013 and 2019. These allegations, made on the social media platform X, led to an interdict against him.
The court documents, which were publicly shared by Fikile Mbalula on X, detail that Khawula has been ordered to pay damages amounting to R1 million to Mbalula and Perrow. Additionally, he must cover their legal costs and remove the defamatory statements from his X account within 48 hours of the order.
Khawula’s financial woes are compounded by his claim that he cannot afford the damages. The National Prosecuting Authority confirmed that Khawula appeared in Vredenburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, but the case has been remanded to September 2 for further proceedings.
Adding to Khawula’s legal troubles is a pending murder case involving Wandile Khambule. Reports from Sunday World indicate that Khawula is implicated in an incident from March 4, 2022, when he allegedly visited the residence of Khambule’s girlfriend, Sweetness Jaftha, in Vredenburg. During this visit, Khawula reportedly demanded to see Khambule, an action linked to the ongoing murder investigation.
As Khawula navigates these legal challenges, the swirling rumours about his death only add to the drama surrounding his controversial public life. For now, the blogger remains behind bars, facing serious charges that could have far-reaching consequences for his future.
