After six years of separation, businessman Sbu Mpisane and businesswoman Shauwn ‘MaMkhize’ Mkhize have officially finalized their divorce. The Durban High Court granted the divorce on Monday, officially ending the former power couple’s 20-plus years of marriage. MaMkhize first filed for divorce in 2018, marking the start of a lengthy and contentious legal battle.
The split, however, was not without its challenges. Throughout the years, the two have been embroiled in disputes over their shared wealth and assets. According to sources close to the couple, MaMkhize fought hard to retain full control over their assets, despite being married in community of property. Their dispute over money and business ventures has been a focal point of their divorce proceedings. While MaMkhize sought to keep everything, Mpisane argued that his contributions to their successful ventures and the fortune they built together should not be overlooked.
During the separation, the couple reportedly lived in separate wings of their luxurious mansion in La Lucia, Durban, a symbol of the financial and emotional distance that grew between them. MaMkhize’s reality show, Kwa Mam’Khize, revealed some of the personal reasons behind her decision to end the marriage. “I think the small problem that led to my divorce was that Sbu loved himself. I also loved Sbu. So, no one cared for me,” she shared, offering insight into the emotional struggles that led to their split.
The couple, married in 1991 and parents to a son, now faces the challenge of dividing the substantial wealth they accumulated over the years. While the specifics of their financial settlement remain unclear, it is certain that the process will continue to be a complicated affair, given the scale of their joint assets.
When approached for comment, Mpisane referred ZiMoja to the Durban High Court for official documents, noting that the court’s records are public. He also directed inquiries about the divorce to MaMkhize, adding, “Shauwn is the author of the divorce, so you’re free to speak to her because I don’t want her to sue me for speaking about things I don’t know.” MaMkhize, however, did not respond to requests for comment.
As both parties move forward, their divorce marks the end of an era for one of South Africa’s most well-known business duos, and the resolution of their long-running legal battle will likely continue to capture public attention.
