The local artist recognized the need for sanitary pads and chose to donate them as part of his Batho Pele Initiative.
Evans Mhlongo, also known by his stage name Haughty Master, has launched the Batho Pele Initiative, a sanitary pad drive designed to support women of all ages in Thembisa, as well as in surrounding areas such as Kempton Park and Vosloorus.
The name Batho Pele, meaning “People First,” embodies Mhlongo’s commitment to addressing menstrual health challenges and breaking the stigma surrounding menstruation. The initiative ensures that women have access to essential hygiene and menstrual products, empowering them to manage their health with dignity.
“My passion for helping the community has been a driving force throughout my journey in the music industry,” Mhlongo shared. “I started by performing at community events for free, and over time, my contributions expanded from music to providing tangible support.”
The campaign, which began in July 2024, has already seen significant impact, with Mhlongo donating over 150 packs of sanitary pads to date. He is determined to continue expanding the initiative, aiming to distribute even more products in the coming months.
Looking ahead, Mhlongo plans to further extend his outreach by organizing a food parcel drive to support vulnerable families. While the initiative is currently self-funded, Mhlongo has received valuable contributions from a few dedicated supporters.
With a vision for national reach, Mhlongo hopes the Batho Pele Initiative will grow beyond Thembisa and provide much-needed relief to communities across South Africa.
“I want to see this initiative help people not just in my community, but nationwide,” Mhlongo said, emphasizing his long-term goal of fostering widespread change.
