Maskandi star Khuzani Mpungose is determined to keep his popular Gcwalisa Spring Picnic All White event alive, despite losing a key sponsor. MDSM Solutions, a major partner in the event for the past three years, has decided to withdraw its support, effective immediately. This leaves Khuzani’s Indlamlenze Development Foundation searching for new opportunities as they plan for the future of the annual picnic.
The Gcwalisa Spring Picnic, held annually at King’s Park Stadium in Durban, has become one of the city’s premier events, attracting top South African talent. Over the years, the picnic has featured performances from prominent artists such as the late AKA, Cassper Nyovest, Joyous Celebration, Mthandeni SK, Big Zulu, and Ntencane, making it a highly anticipated gathering for fans of maskandi and South African music in general.
In a letter dated January 6, 2025, MGSM Solutions, owned by renowned Durban businessman Sibongiseni “Mageza” Mbambo, notified Khuzani of their decision to end their partnership. The letter thanked Khuzani and his team for the rewarding collaboration over the past three years, highlighting the invaluable insights gained into the maskandi genre. Despite this, MGSM Solutions expressed its gratitude for the opportunity to have been part of the event’s growth. Efforts to reach Mageza for further comment have been unsuccessful.
Khuzani, who launched the picnic in 2022, expressed his gratitude to MGSM Solutions for their role in the event’s success. “Their involvement has been invaluable in helping us grow and celebrate the maskandi genre,” Khuzani said. “While this partnership has come to an end, we remain committed to hosting the Gcwalisa Spring Picnic All White event. We are actively exploring new opportunities and partnerships to ensure the continued success and growth of this important initiative.”
The news of the sponsor’s withdrawal has created uncertainty, but Khuzani’s optimism and dedication to the project suggest that the Gcwalisa Spring Picnic will continue to thrive, with fresh collaborations on the horizon. The Indlamlenze Development Foundation remains resolute in its mission to advance maskandi music and culture, ensuring that the beloved picnic continues to be a highlight in Durban’s annual events calendar.
