Tributes continue to pour in for Lucky Morajane, the beloved “gentle giant” who passed away on 5 November at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital in Soweto after a brief illness. His untimely death has left a deep sense of loss among colleagues, friends, and all who knew him. Lucky’s funeral service will be held on Saturday, 16 November, beginning at 9 a.m. at his home in Emdeni, Soweto, before proceeding to Slovoville Cemetery for his final resting place at 11 a.m.
I first met Lucky in 2008 when I joined as a photographer, and he quickly became a mentor. Known affectionately as “WWE,” Lucky took me under his wing, offering guidance that helped me navigate the intimidating world of professional photography. His generosity, expertise, and passion for the craft were apparent from the start, making him an unforgettable influence in my career.
Lucky’s technical skill and creative vision were unparalleled, and even though we often disagreed on artistic direction, I always valued his perspective. His dedication to his work was evident in every project he undertook, and his presence on any team elevated the quality of work around him. He was a man of immense talent and character, respected by all who worked with him.
In his memory, I have compiled some of his photographs, a testament to his extraordinary journey and the legacy he leaves behind. Lucky’s influence will continue to resonate with those who were fortunate enough to learn from him, and his spirit will live on through the work he created and the lives he touched.
