The 16th Feather Awards, held on 7 November at 1 Fox in Johannesburg, began with delays that frustrated guests. Attendees, who had braved the rain, were left waiting for hours without clear communication on the show’s start time. Once the ceremony began, it was revealed that the hosts—Dineo Moeketsi, Khaya Dladla, and Andiswa Gebasha—had also been delayed, adding to the chaos.
The event, themed Borderless Existence, celebrates contributions to the LGBTQIA+ community and society. Gay activist Amstel kicked off the ceremony with an energetic performance, reigniting the audience’s excitement. The evening continued with powerful speeches and heartfelt moments, including a video message from Kgothatso Montjane, who won two awards but couldn’t attend in person.
Notable winners included actress Lunathi Mampofu and Montjane, both taking home two awards. Momentum’s Nontokozo Madonsela claimed the Fag Hag of the Year award, beating high-profile contenders like Minister Lindiwe Zulu. Fashion stylist Felipe Mazibuko received the Simon Nkoli Feather Award, delivering an inspiring message about unity and community.
The evening concluded with Nthati Moshesh winning Diva Extraordinaire of the Year, defeating competition from Ministers Naledi Pandor and Gayton McKenzie. Despite the delays, the Feather Awards 2024 successfully highlighted outstanding individuals and organizations, reaffirming its role in promoting diversity, inclusivity, and societal progress.
