Ga-Kama Residents Fear Spending Christmas in Darkness Over Eskomβs New Meter Program
Residents of Ga-Kama near Mankweng fear they might spend Christmas without power after Eskom announced that South Africans must register their meters by November 24, 2024, as part of a new program. Many residents are confused about this sudden requirement, feeling they were not adequately informed and worried that their old meters might stop working if they donβt comply.
Elderly residents like Gogo Adwin Mogashao, 68, have voiced concerns about the registration process. She mentioned that many people canβt afford to travel to Eskomβs offices in Polokwane and suggested door-to-door assistance instead. Similarly, 60-year-old Job Lediga shared that his old meter works well, and he feels uneasy about switching to a new system without any guidance from local officials.
Eskom has clarified that customers do not need to replace their old meters. According to Matsidiso Phaladi, Eskomβs Limpopo spokesperson, residents can complete the transition by simply purchasing credit tokens from authorized vendors. Each purchase will provide two sets of 20-digit codes for customers to enter into their meters, completing the migration to the Key Revision No. 2 program.
This clarification is meant to ease residents’ concerns, but many are still hoping for additional support from Eskom to avoid any disruptions during the holiday season.
