ANC Criticizes DA’s Push for New Oversight Committee on Presidency

The African National Congress (ANC) is voicing frustration over a recent move by the Democratic Alliance (DA) to create a parliamentary oversight committee dedicated to the presidency. This proposal passed narrowly in Parliament, gaining support from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and ActionSA, who argue that a dedicated committee would increase transparency and accountability in the president’s office. The recommendation follows the Zondo Commission’s call for stronger oversight of the executive branch.

The ANC argues that the existing structures in Parliament already provide sufficient oversight of the presidency. Chief Whip Mdumiseni Ntuli highlighted mechanisms like debates, questioning sessions, and the work of the Planning, Monitoring, and Evaluation Committee as effective in holding the presidency accountable. According to the ANC, a new committee focused solely on the presidency could be redundant and potentially lead to further politicization of oversight activities.

In contrast, DA leaders and their allies argue that establishing this committee would be a significant step in preventing future abuses of power within the executive branch. They believe a dedicated committee would offer focused and consistent scrutiny, particularly in light of revelations from the Zondo Commission regarding state capture.

The proposal’s passage reflects ongoing divisions in Parliament over how best to manage and distribute oversight authority. A subcommittee has been formed to examine the potential structure and scope of the committee before any final decisions are made. This development could shape the future of executive oversight in South Africa and set a new precedent for how the presidency is monitored.
