In a historic and emotional announcement, Bishop T.D. Jakes revealed on April 27, 2025, that he will be stepping down as Senior Pastor of The Potter’s House, the influential Dallas-based megachurch he founded nearly three decades ago.
The transition, set to take effect in July 2025, marks a significant generational shift as leadership passes to his daughter, Sarah Jakes Roberts, and her husband, Touré Roberts, both of whom have built respected ministries of their own. Together, they will shepherd the 30,000-member congregation into its next chapter.
Bishop Jakes, 67, assured members that while he is stepping back from the pulpit, he will remain deeply involved as Chairman of the Church’s Board and as a spiritual advisor, maintaining continuity in vision and oversight.
“I didn’t want to leave the church without a clear plan,” Jakes told congregants, reflecting on his November 2024 heart attack that expedited the transition. “God prepared us for this moment.”
The announcement drew a mix of reverence, gratitude, and reflection from church members and followers around the globe. Longtime congregant Marla Evans expressed the sentiment of many:
“Bishop Jakes is a legend. No one can replace him—but his legacy lives on through Sarah.”
Deacon James Carter noted the couple’s increased visibility and leadership, particularly during Bishop Jakes’ recovery:
“Sarah has led us with grace and spiritual clarity. We’re ready for this next season.”
The transition comes as Bishop Jakes shifts his focus to broader ventures, including a newly announced podcast with iHeartMedia titled “My Next Chapter,” which will explore faith, leadership, and life beyond the pulpit.
With Sarah and Touré at the helm, The Potter’s House aims to remain a powerful voice in the global faith community while expanding its reach to younger generations through innovative ministry and digital outreach.
