Police Minister Senzo Mchunu is expected to attend a high-profile bail hearing today at the Richmond Magistrate’s Court in KwaZulu-Natal, where a suspect is facing serious charges of assault and attempted murder in a gender-based violence (GBV) case.
The case stems from a violent incident in the Maswazini area of Richmond, where the suspect—believed to be the ex-boyfriend of the victim—allegedly launched a brutal attack on the woman while she was at home with her mother.
According to Police Ministry spokesperson Kamogelo Mogotsi, the minister’s presence at the court underscores the government’s zero-tolerance stance on GBV and its commitment to supporting victims and ensuring accountability for perpetrators.
“This case represents the devastating reality faced by many women in South Africa,” Mogotsi said. “Minister Mchunu’s attendance signals the seriousness with which this government is addressing gender-based violence.”
The suspect, whose identity has not yet been released pending court proceedings, is expected to apply for bail during today’s hearing. Meanwhile, the victim is receiving medical and psychological support.
The incident adds to the growing outcry over South Africa’s GBV crisis, with calls for stronger legal protection, faster justice processes, and increased support for survivors.
