Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has issued a stark warning to the African National Congress (ANC): if it continues on its current political trajectory, it could pave the way for Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhuisen to become President of South Africa.
Speaking during a recent political engagement, Malema expressed deep frustration with the ANC’s conduct in the Government of National Unity (GNU) and its perceived alliance with the DA. He warned that the ANC’s political missteps could have dramatic consequences in the coming months.
“If the ANC continues the way it’s behaving, John Steenhuisen is going to be the President of South Africa,” Malema cautioned. “And when a motion of no confidence comes against Ramaphosa, we will vote with the DA.”
This bold statement signals a potential political pivot by the EFF—one that could see the party temporarily align with ideological rivals in the DA to unseat President Cyril Ramaphosa.
Malema’s warning adds fuel to an already tense political atmosphere, as coalitions remain unstable and party loyalties are tested in the wake of South Africa’s most fractured election outcomes in decades. The possibility of a motion of no confidence against Ramaphosa is now seen as more than mere political posturing, especially with the EFF willing to swing votes in a decisive parliamentary showdown.
The ANC has not officially responded to Malema’s remarks, but the threat of a cross-party alliance to unseat the sitting president may prompt urgent introspection within the ruling party’s leadership ranks.
