Authorities in KwaZulu-Natal have arrested 120 undocumented foreign nationals following a major operation at a factory in the KwaSithebe Industrial Park, located in Mandeni.
The arrest came after law enforcement and immigration officials discovered that the individuals were working illegally, without valid permits or documentation. The factory, whose name has not yet been disclosed, is now under investigation for alleged violations of labour and immigration laws.
Officials from the Department of Home Affairs, working in tandem with local police, said the raid was part of a broader effort to clamp down on illegal employment practices and ensure compliance with South African immigration regulations.
βThis is a warning to employers exploiting undocumented workers,β said a spokesperson for the department. βThere will be consequences for those who break the law.β
The arrested individuals are expected to undergo immigration status verification, with possible deportation proceedings to follow. The factory owners may also face charges related to the employment of illegal foreign nationals and violations of the Basic Conditions of Employment Act.
The incident has sparked renewed debate over undocumented labour in South Africa and the role of employers in perpetuating illegal practices for economic gain.
