Midrand, Gauteng — One of South Africa’s most elusive fugitives, Linda Hlongwa—known by his street names ‘Mjinja’ and ‘Putin’—was dramatically arrested in Midrand yesterday, ending a nearly five-year manhunt.
Hlongwa had been on the run since July 2020, evading law enforcement while allegedly continuing to orchestrate violent crimes from the shadows. His name hit national headlines once again in recent weeks after being linked to the gruesome double murder of his girlfriend and her mother in Pinetown, KwaZulu-Natal.
According to sources close to the investigation, Hlongwa was captured during a joint operation involving multiple intelligence units. Authorities had been tracking his movements for several months before finally closing in on a rented property in Midrand.
Police say Hlongwa was also a key figure in a long-running extortion ring targeting small and medium-sized businesses in Mariannhill, using threats, intimidation, and violence to collect “protection fees.”
“This arrest marks a turning point in the fight against organized crime in KwaZulu-Natal and beyond,” said a senior SAPS official. “He’s been a ghost for years. We can now begin to dismantle the network he left behind.”
The Shadow of ‘Putin’
Nicknamed ‘Putin’ by associates for his controlling, cold-blooded demeanor, Hlongwa built a fearsome reputation in underground circles. Residents and business owners in areas he operated often lived in fear, unwilling to speak out.
The arrest has sparked relief across affected communities, with many hoping justice will finally be served and criminal networks disrupted.
What’s Next?
Hlongwa is currently in police custody and expected to be transferred to KwaZulu-Natal under tight security. He will face multiple charges, including double homicide, extortion, and racketeering.
The National Prosecuting Authority has confirmed it will pursue a high-priority prosecution, and more arrests may follow as investigations into his alleged syndicate continue.
