Mamelodi Sundowns has bid farewell to their long-serving analyst and scout Duan Baker, following the conclusion of his contract. Baker, who joined the club from Ajax Cape Town, leaves after four successful years in which he played a significant role in Sundowns’ domestic and continental triumphs.
During his time at Sundowns, Baker was instrumental in helping the club secure nine major trophies, including the CAF Womenβs Champions League with the Sundowns Ladies and four Betway Premiership titles with the menβs team.
Baker expressed his gratitude on social media, thanking the Sundowns board for the opportunity to be part of the clubβs historic journey: βThank you to the Sundowns board for giving me the opportunity to be part of the history makers at the club.β
His departure has caught many by surprise, particularly given his reputation for discovering raw talent from grassroots football, which made him a key figure at Chloorkop.
Cape Town City Leads the Charge for Baker’s Signature
Baker may not be out of work for long, with sources suggesting that Cape Town City is already eyeing him. He has a history with City owner John Comitis from their time at Ajax Cape Town, making a potential reunion a strong possibility. Furthermore, Cape Town City’s incoming coach, Andries Ulderink, also shares a past with Baker from their time at Ajax, further fueling the speculation of a reunion.
Competition for Baker’s services is intensifying, as Sekhukhune Unitedβs analyst and scout Sinesipho Mali is also reportedly under consideration by Cape Town City, indicating their strong intent to strengthen their backroom staff ahead of the new season.
With several PSL clubs reportedly interested, it seems like only a matter of time before Duan Baker secures his next position. His expertise and proven track record make him one of the most sought-after scouts in South African football right now.
