In a major breakthrough for South African law enforcement, Linda Hlongwa, infamously known as ‘Mjinja’ or ‘Putin’, has been arrested in Midrand, Gauteng, following a coordinated operation between KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng police units.
Hlongwa, one of South Africa’s most wanted fugitives, had been on the run since July 2020, after failing to appear in court on charges of illegal firearm and ammunition possession. But his notoriety surged again in March 2025, when he was linked to the brutal double murder of his girlfriend and her mother in Pinetown.

Beyond the murder allegations, ‘Mjinja’ is also believed to be the kingpin of a regional extortion network, allegedly terrorizing scholar transport operators, tuckshop owners, and taxi businesses in Mariannhill and surrounding townships. His arrest is being hailed as a significant victory in the fight against organised crime and extortion in KwaZulu-Natal.
“This arrest sends a clear message to those who believe they can evade justice—your time will come,” said one senior police official involved in the operation.
Authorities are now preparing to bring multiple charges against Hlongwa as they intensify their crackdown on violent and organized crime in the region. Communities affected by his alleged reign of fear are watching closely, hoping this signals the beginning of justice and safety being restored.
