Mamelodi Sundowns are gearing up to announce the signings of three new players in the coming days as they look to defend their Betway Premiership title. The Pretoria-based club has already bolstered their squad with Iqraam Rayners from Stellenbosch FC during the summer transfer window, and now theyβre adding more talent to strengthen their bid for success this season.
Sundowns are currently leading the Premiership, three points clear of second-placed Orlando Pirates, who are also eyeing the title. To maintain their dominance, the club is reportedly finalizing the addition of three high-quality players this January.
One of these signings is Lucas Suarez, an experienced Argentine defender who will join Sundowns on loan for the remainder of the season. There is also an option to make the move permanent after the campaign concludes. Suarez has international experience, having represented Argentina at the 2015 FIFA Under-20 World Cup in New Zealand.
In addition to Suarez, Sundowns are expected to bring in two South African internationals. Midfielder Jayden Adams will join from Stellenbosch FC, replacing him at the Cape club will be a former Kaizer Chiefs player. The third signing is striker Lebo Mothiba, who has been without a club since his release from French Ligue 1 side Strasbourg last summer. Despite links to several clubs, including Kaizer Chiefs and Wydad Athletic, Mothiba has returned to Sundowns on a six-month deal.
With these additions, Sundowns are not just looking to defend their league title, but also to push for a treble this season, as they remain in contention for the CAF Champions League, Nedbank Cup, and the Premiership. Additionally, Sundowns are one of four African clubs set to compete at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup in North America.
In other news, Matias Esquivel, who has spent the last six months on loan at Club Atletico Talleres, is expected to return to Sundowns. While it’s unclear what the club plans to do with the Argentine midfielder, his future at Sundowns remains in the cards.
Lastly, Sundowns are also set to swap players with Stellenbosch, sending Lesiba Nku to the Cape side while securing Jayden Adams in return.
